Special Visit Nancy and the Staff hosted a group of young
women from the Youth Art Corps. The Corps is sponsored by
the Pinellas County Arts Council and provides free art classes
to young people.
9 young women and 3 instructors from the "Girls Quilting
Class" were given a "hands on" tour of the
Gallery, and different techniques used in creating hand
made jewelry, pottery, glass, wood, metal and fabric were
explained.
"They were like little butterflies lighting on works
all over the gallery and asking about them!" the Staff
said.
The young women were especially thrilled to see the quilting
techniques they were learning used as decoration in many
different ways - on paper cards, scarves, dolls and bags.
Nancy encouraged the women to use pieces of cloth from their
own lives: old dresses, linens, scarves, hats etc in their
own quilting.
Learning that a lot of work in the Gallery is created by
women, the group was prompted to think that a career as
an American Craftswoman was a very viable plan! ( Nancy
is currently Chair of the Arts Business Institute, a non
profit organization that mentors and prsents workshops for
artists seeking professional help.)
All of the members of the group received a Gallery gift
bag as a rememberance of their visit.
